She's Pregnant. What Now?
If you are fortunate enough to know when she got pregnant, you can estimate her due date.
Guinea pigs are pregnant for 59-72 days with the average being 63 days. The more pups she has, the earlier she will give birth. The opposite is also true. Guinea pigs having their first litter will have a shorter gestation time as well. They can have 1-6 pups in a litter; typically averaging at 3-4 pups. |
Diet
Pregnant females need a lot more calcium and vitamin c in their diet than other guinea pigs do. So giving her more calcium rich food, like kale, alfalfa based pellets and hay will help her have an easier pregnancy. She will gain a lot of weight. As much as doubling her "usual" weight is normal. Exercise Exercise is also important. Floor time once a day for at least an hour is recommended. It helps their muscles stay strong for giving birth. Handling Try not to handle her as much. Just be careful when handling her. Always support her hind legs. This prevents injury to the pups. |
